How do I protect part of an document? I have created check boxes that are to
be filled in - and in the same document I have rows for free comments. When I
protect the document the check boxes can be used but then the comment lines
are protected as well :-(

Insert a section break (Insert > Break > choose a type of section
break, probably continuous is what you want) between the two parts.
Then go to Tools > Protect Document (in Word 2002 or 2003 this opens a
task pane, in earlier versions it opens a dialog box). Select Forms.
At that moment the Sections button or link becomes available. Click it
and uncheck the section that should NOT be protected. OK the dialog or
click the Start Enforcing Protection button.

There are some things that won't be available even in the unprotected
section, but straight typing will work.
