Wasn't that the whole point of sharing it?

Set the Share permissions to allow only that access which you desire.

Well, Windows (some versions) DOES do that, but Windows NT/2000/XP
doesn't do it.

What are you talking about? You can specify security in the workgroup on
NT, 2000, and XP Professional when using NTFS. As long as the other people
in the workgroup don't have administrator level access they can't take
ownership of the folder/files.

Or whoever is granted permission to Take Ownership in the Local Security
Policy.

Bullshit, I have a couple of folders shared across 7 pc's and a few of them
are password protected. Using a mix of 98SE and XP pc's.

True XP hides it better than 98SE does, but it's still there.

No YOU are talking bullshit. Windows has NEVER EVER (from 3.1 right up
to XP) had the ability to password-protect INDIVIDUAL files or folders.

Wrong, since NTFS (meaning Win NT 4, 2000, and XP) you've been able to set
security permissions on files/folders that require the proper user
credentials to access those objects - with a properly logged User/Password
you can access the files.

Hey dummy, look at what the OP was asking for: the ability to protect
files/folders using PASSWORDS. You don't do that in XP/2000/NT, you
do exactly what you are describing: setting permissions.

So you rebuked me, then provided links proving my point.

Are you just a little confused?
