On loading a powerpoint 2002 file into a PC with powerpont 2003 it left a
number of my slides completely blank (not even a red cross!); these were
mainly graphs and artwork. Not funny when this was a presentation to 800
people.

How can this be avoided

Graham,
Have you installed SP1 for PPT 2003? That should solve this problem. Easiest
way to do it is to open PPT and do Help--> Check for Updates and follow the
links on the web page.

On the PC with PowerPoint 2003, you should update it to Service Pack 1. Go to
Help > Check for Updates and follow the links for updates.

(It's always good practice to test in advance on the machine you're going to
present from if it is not the machine where you developed the presentation.)
