You could start with Pryme ( do a google ), which has a built in ftp
server that allows you to upload snapshots ( via timer or motion
detection ) to a website.

Shots ( and video ) can also be saved to a folder - so I assume it
will work across a network, though I dunno about a live feed.

Winamp supposedly handles video now, so you might check out their
site.

We tried setting something up like that here, so we could see who was at the
door from the far end of the house. Unfortunately, there must be some USB
cable limitation. Not sure how many feet you can have before you need an
extension box to enhance the signal.

Google says 5 metres, or was it meters. ;)

And that's absolute, due to the speed of the signal on the cable. The
only "extension box" you can use is called "a computer". (USB 1.1 can
use longer cables because it's slower.)

No. That won't work. We'll have to find some other method. We can't put
another computer in the hallway. Other than USB, what options have we? There
is probably a similar limitation on wireless devices or firewire devices
isn't there?

Firewire, yes.

I get about 30 feet of noise-free picture with an old 2.4 GHz Radio
Shack TV extender through a few walls.

If you really *need* (as opposed to "want") much more distance than
that, you'll have to revert to sending a plain video signal to the
computer and converting it to USB there. (You can send video over
3,000 miles on a cable and maintain broadcast quality, so distance
won't be the limiting factor.) It won't be cheap, however.

Or you can put a small computer (you can even do it with a pocket PC
and a wall wart) near the camera and connect it to the network
wirelessly (or wired - Cat-5 cable can go farther than USB cable.)
