how do i merge partitions?

By default, my laptop came with the harddrive partitioned into the C and D
drives. How would i merge the D to be only a larger C drive?
 
You would need a third party software like partition magic to merge the
partitions
as windows XP doesn't contain this ability within it's operating system.
unless you want to delete both partitions and reinstall windows to one, if
so make a backup of your data first, and all your drivers for hardware.

XP does not have the tools to do this non destructively. Use something like
BootIT Next Generation from Terabyte Unlimited. They offer a 30 day full
featured free trial version.
