I'm trying to merge Name cells into one - got it done, but then I need to
delete the cells I merged - keep getting the reference error, as I delete the
cells that are in the formula

Highlight the cells where the formula is and then fix the values by
clicking <copy>, then Edit | Paste Special | Values (check) | OK then
<Esc>.

You can now safely delete the original columns of data.

Hope this helps.

And don't call them "merged cells".

You have "combined" the contents of two cells into one.

That is not "merging" which is combining the contents of one cell into two or
more cells.
