Rob

I have downloaded the critical and security updates for
WinXP. I am not clear on how to install them. This is
for a friend's computer who has buggy dial-up service and
needs some help.

Thanks

Hi Rob,

Did you download the standalone versions? IF so, then just copy them to CD
and bring them to your friends system. Double-click them right from the CD.

if you downloaded the updates using normal update procedure then you cannot.
you need to download the updates via the catalogue process instead.

this web site explains in detail how to go about doing this

Can I just chip in and say that this is, IMO, a major shortfall in the
otherwise excellent (when it works) 'auto update' system, and if someone
from MS is listening could we =please= have an option to put updates
somewhere permanent in future!

Heck, we get the $NTUninstall files saved, which are typically useless,
but the 'good stuff' which we spent time/money acquiring goes straight
into the bit-bucket after use.

Hi,

I first deleted all my "Internet TEMP files" and then
used the Microsoft auto installer. Then I copyied all
the 28 critical updates (EXE files) from TEMP into
another folder. EX:
"Q328310_WXP_SP2_da_8ba6f31496335fce2bde609ebca56d1
[1].exe"

Benny, http://2dos.homepage.dk

PS.
One of the 28 files was not critical and for
Nvidia (hardware), so it maybe not work on another PC.

BTW.
An updating could be independent, EX. if installing the
Windows Media Player 9, (not critical):
"MPSETUPXP_03421DA2E01016ACF60EA5C0C46A63119B01598B
[1].EXE", then the critical Media Player 9
update: "WindowsMedia9-KB819639-x86-
DAN_b00a78d578fa6cb783ee0cfc1b97fe4[1].exe",
should be installed alone (if I remember).
