how do i make a sum from a vlookup?

I make a vlookup list of several catagories that can change weekly, if
want to sum those numbers that corrispond to those catagories how woul
i go about doing that? ex. i want to know the total orders of each pe
if this week, jane wants 5 puppies, pete wants 6 cats, doug wants
parrots, and homer wants 3 puppies, can i sum up the numbers when th
catagories constantly change....next week jane might want 3 cats, pet
might want 8 dogs, while hommer might want 1 cat? how can i sum in
table that is constanly changing like that
