I have a document that I want a background on the first page only. It is a
booklet and I want the background picture just on the first page. How do I
do this?

Check the box for "Different first page" on the Layout tab of Page Setup and
then anchor your watermark to the First Page Header.

Two ways come to mind:

1. If you are inserting the background by clicking on Format | Background,
then insert a Next-Page Section Break between the first and second pages, and
apply the background to the current section only.

2. If there is an image that you want in the background on the first page
only, you can put that in the main body instead of in the header. Click on
Insert | Picture | From File | <select your image> | OK. Then right-click on
the image, left-click on Format Picture | Layout | Behind Text | OK. And
drag the image to where you want it on the page.
