How do I know what updates to install?

Hello..
In lieu of this recent attack of the virus/worm...
I have followed all the advice given RE:
the worm blaster tool...and this patch...

I just, minutes ago installed that patch.
Then I went to windows update and scanned for more updates.
It appears it requests me to download and install several
security updates as well as a few critical updates.
My questions is...
Which ones do I know I truly need to install?
I have spoke to many people on the net saying not all that
are offered are necessary, especially the speaical package
1 or something like that as it creates major PC failures.
Please advise what I need to download?

Hi

May I suggest that you download and install all of the Security and Critical updates. As to the Recommended ones, that is really up to the individual user. Service Pack 1 does include a lot of Security/Critical updates:
