To determine the version of Windows XP that you are running, follow these
steps:
1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type winver.exe, and then click OK. The version
number is displayed in the About Windows box.

How about reading down the posts for the answer that's been given several
times already?

doing this does not show whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit.
it just has a version.although this was the most helpful
response it still does not help. maybe rather than all
the smart ass responses you people are posting because of
some need to feel superior over those who may not be
as "smart" as you, someone can actually give a straight
answer to how you can tell what bit it is so the rest of
us can downlaod the right patch????????/

You might find it a "smartass" response, but think of it this way:
If you don't know, you didn't have to go through all the trouble of finding
a *SPECIFIC,* 64-bit Itanium powered workstation or server and
*SPECIFICALLY* order 64-bit Windows XP to go with it, spending a *minimum*
of - think it was $3200 for a "very" low end workstation.

You *cannot* buy XP 64-bit edition "off the shelf" in *any* software store,
or off of *any* retail outlet.

If you're running 64-bit WinXP, at the *minimum* you're using it in a
professional engineering or scientific environment, and most likely have an
IT department taking care of these things for you.

You'd also not be missing the "Windows XP 64 bit edition" identifiers.

<!--[endif]-->

A. No, Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will be available only through OEMs
that offer Itanium-based hardware and available via the Microsoft Developers
Network (MSDN).

Q. What are the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of
Windows XP? <!--[if ! IE]--> What are the differences between 32-bit and
64-bit versions of Windows XP? <!--[endif]-->

A. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is designed to meet the needs of
technical workstation customers running high-performance applications.
Windows XP Professional 32-bit is designed for general business and
education customers as well as consumers. There will are feature differences
amongst the various versions of Windows XP. For a complete list of feature
differences between Windows XP 64-Bit Edition and Windows XP Professional,
see the following TechNet article: Differences with Windows XP 64-Bit
Edition.

It's not a matter of "Feeling smarter," it's a matter of having answered the
SAME question - I've done so at least 30 times today.

Think of it this way. You want to get the oil changed in your car, and
you're asking "How do I know if I have a Mack truck or not?" You'd have to
go through a LOT more effort to get a Mack truck than (say) a Ford Focus.

If you have to ask if your copy of XP is 32 or 64 bit, it's 32.
