I have no confidence that when the icon / popup
says I have automatic updates pending which need to
be added------that it's really Microsoft
and not some hacker, worm or virus?????

when I purchased my Norton Anti virus, continuation
and "installed/downloaded" it I found I now havea bunch
of "popups"

SO THE QUESTION IS HOW DO I HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT A POPUP
WHICH SAYS I HAVE "AUTOMATIC UPDATES" ARE REALLY FROM MY
MICROSOFT PROGRAM AND NEEDED OR JUST SOME SPAM / JUNK
OR MARKETING ??????

Pat;
Do you mean "w32.lovsan.worm" AKA Blaster?
You did not get it from Microsoft.
So you need to thank others also with unprotected computers.
Blaster may have go to your unprotected computer while you were on the
Microsoft site, but that is not at all the same as getting it from
Microsoft.

If you have Blaster:
DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network IMMEDIATELY.

If necessary to stop the reboot process:
Start/Run
Type "shutdown -a" ENTER

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY, before connecting to the
internet:

VERY IMPORTANT to follow ALL steps, closing ports or installing the
patch is NOT enough.
Download the patch and updates referenced below.
You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and burn to CD.

Follow this to remove the Blaster files:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

Then download and install the appropriate patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-039.asp

In the future, to protect the safety and security of your computer:
Keep your firewall enabled/installed

Install ALL Critical Updates IMMEDIATELY.
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

Install an antivirus application
Update it weekly
Run it at least weekly
