How do I insert new text into an outline document?

I want ot insert new text into and outline formatted document and continue
the outlining. Example
1. Test
1.1 futher test
a. even more testing
b. results
I WANT TO INSERT NEW ITEM NO.2 HERE AND CONTINUE FORMAT AND CHAGE NO. 2 TO
NO. 3 AUTOMATICALLY
2. Exploration
2.1 further exploration
a. even more exploration

Insert your text where you want it.
The apply the style of the Headings as appropriate, if the styles have been
properly setup, then the numbering should be automatic. Remember that a Table
of Contents will need to be refreshed, as this is not automatic.
