How do I insert footnotes into various cells inExcel 2000 spreads.

I'm trying to insert footnotes into various cells in an Excel 2000
spreadsheet. I'd like to put a numeric character in a particular cell, which
would be a pointer to the footnote asociated with that cell. Does anybody
know how to do this?
 
Excel doesn't really do this well.

Maybe you could put a shape (triangle) in a corner and add a number to the
shape???
