I need to be able to insert a box that can be checked or unchecked with just
a click into a Word document.

G'day "mleeo" <[email protected]>,

Use the Forms toolbar. Insert your checkbox into the document, stick
continuous section breaks around it and protect it as a form, you can
then type into the rest of the document and have a single checkbox you
can set or clear.

There are a number of ways to create and use clickable checkboxes in
documents / templates. Some require protected or locked forms, others do
not. Take a look at the Checkbox template available at
http://www.addbalance.com/word/download.htm#CheckboxAddIn for an exploration
of these.
