How do I input italized lowercase prefatory numbers in a TOC.

The letters I, II, V, VI etc appear as uppercase letters in the TOC before
starting with regular page numbers, but I need these letters to be lowercase
and italized. Having difficulty figuring this out. Any help would be
appreciated.

How do they appear on your pages? Is that level in your TOC formatted as All
Caps? If so, you probably won't be able to change the formatting of the page
numbers without unlinking the TOC.

No problem. You can change the formatting of your table of contents
easily without even updating your TOC!
Just get your cursor (carefully) next to the the level in your TOC you
want to change. Is it heading 1?
Next, Click on the Aa next to the style on your toolbar or choose
Format Style and edit the TOC 1 style so the Font formatting does not
have ALL caps selected. Your TOC should automatically reflect your
changes. Play around with it a bit until you get the result you're
looking for.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you can change the format of the
Numbering in your TOC by modify the style as mentioned before, but
choose "Numbering" and then in the pop up box choose Font and set your
preferences for the Page numbers there!

Yep! You definitely need to modify the table of contents Style. These
styles are named TOC 1, TOC 2, etc. Let me know if you get stumped.

evident that the TOC style has already been changed to All Caps and that
that is what is causing the numbering to be capitalized. There is no way to
format the *page* numbers in a TOC through Format | Numbering.

Well, I think you have misread. His response may have been wrong but
he has not stated that you can format the *page* numbers in a TOC
throug Format | Numbering.

You're right! I was wrong, sorry about that. I did find a work around
though. A person can simply highlight the text in the TOC that they
want to be lowercase and use the SHIFT + F3 function to manually change
the numbers. You'd have to repeat this everytime you update the TOC,
but it will work.

Next time, try correcting me without the nasty tone?
