How do I go from search assistant to search companion?

I'm trying to get search companion back. I am currently on search assistant.
When I click on seach in the explorer toolbar, then click on customize, it
says, "to open search companion and change its settings, click search on the
Internet explorer toolbar and then click change preferences. I don't see
change preferences anywhere. When I try to reset to search companion, it
won't switch from search assistant!! How do I get search companion back????
