How do I get Windows Mail to auto complete email addresses ?

I am just new to Vista, and Mail. after XP and Outlook... But I can't
understand why when I type the address for the TO- box , it doesn't complete
the address. so I have to go to Contacts, and then scroll down to find the
address of those I want to write to. This is a nuisance... Can someone tell
me where to go to fix it?

Sorry, you can't fix it, because it just doesn't work correctly.

You could switch to the newer Windows Live Mail, which doesn't have this
problem.

Windows Mail will only autocomplete the last 29 recipients you sent to.
 
you have to use the first 3 characters of the name.
you have to use the same address several times for it to be registered in the last used data base.

also WM only remembers the LAST 29 addresses you have asked for.

Thanks to all who replied... This seems to be a real inconvenience. I will
look into Windows Live Mail. I can't believe they went backwards in
convenience.

Guys. I picked your thread to see if you could help me with my issues. Just
recently due to a hijacking situation in Vista- IE 7, something go screwed up
in the Associations protocal. Any e-mail I get where a link or symbol that
you can click on in the message body, is-it won't open or go there , and a
box shows up stating "no association for this file type. Go to set
associations to fix it. Yeah, right! I wen't there and there are a million
file extensions I don't even recognize. And, I don't know which one effects
Windows Mail and the links embedded in message bodies is, and, I would no
know what program to choose to oepn it. Note: Over half of the extensions in
this "Set Associations" box have "Unknown Application" as a default file
type. Help! Any cures?

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on Windows Mail.
If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults" then fix it by
clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
Do the same for Internet Explorer.

If that does not fix the problem, reset IE7: Tools, Internet Options,
Advanced, Reset. Careful, you may want to export your cookies first
because the reset deletes them.

I did what you told me to do with Windows Mail- I made sure it had all of
its defaults, but Internet Explorer is not in that same list to do that with.
Plus, if it was, how would it affect Windows Mail not allowing me to click on
links embedded in the e-mail message bodies?

OK. I reset IE 7. I set the defaults in Windows Mail. I shut them both down
and restarted them.

I went to my e-mail to check the inbox and I say the auto notification that
you responded. Heres the test: I cliked on "read response" embedded in the
e-mail body and again, the grey box showed up "There is no association for
this file type, blah, blah, blah".

Something is blocking any use of any link in an e-mail in Windows Mail. What
is the extension for a file type like that that is a link in a message? And
what program opens it ?

That is not a file type but a protocol.
Go back to Default Programs and click on "Associate a file type or
protocol..." When that screen comes up, scroll all the way to the bottom.
Look for "HTTP URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol." Make sure it is
assigned to IE. If that doesn't fix it, I'm fresh out of ideas.

Your idea might work. All of the URL stuff is blank and not assigned.
However, When I go to "change Association or Protocol to associate it with,
the box pops up with "nothing" to offer...nothing is in the box to pick from.
How do I get IE to show up in the choice box so I can pick it. What caused it
to disappear?

Please explain what's not working with Windows Live Mail. I've not heard of
anyone having problems with WLM completing email addresses.

Also, did you find the OE contacts file (the name ends in .wab),
and either import it into WM before the switch or into WLM
after the switch?

Did your WM contacts get imported into WLM?
