Open Security Center, click "Change the way Security Center alerts me".
De-select "Windows Update".
WHy did you disable Automatic Updates?

I don't trust Microsoft. They're forcing hardware manufacturers to cripple
devices for Vista and I don't want them slipping me a backwards compatible
'package'. I'll get my updates after I've read about them and others have
tested them.
Now I just have to turn off all the other moronic pop-up, in-your-way/face
idiocy. I've just installed XP+SP2 but I think I'll be going back to 2k.
First I've heard of that. Guess because of my lack of interest in
Vista. So what's going on with the crippling thing? Can you cite some
examples. Am interested.

Understand that Automatic Updates includes a setting (Notify Only)
whereby no updates are downloaded *or* installed without your
permission. <IMHO> If you decide to run a Windows OS, I'd recommend
using this setting and seeing if there are, in fact, critical updates
you /want/ to install to protect your machine rather than your risky,
"shoot yourself in the foot" choice. </IMHO>
