I opened a document as I usually do and found to the left of my screen a
column that I do not recognize. I cannot work comfortably on my document but
I do not know how to get rid of the column. H-E-L-P!!!

Several possibilities occur to me:

1. It's the Style Width area. If so, hover the mouse over the dividing line,
and drag it all the way to the left.

2. It's the Document Map. Click the X in the upper right corner of that
column. If there is no X, then choose View - Document Map to toggle it off.

If it's not one of these, then perhaps you could describe the column in
detail so we can deduce what it is.

Could also be Thumbnails (View | Thumbnails to toggle).
