I woundered if you could get MS Word, I only have word pad as I have windows
xp not windows xp HOME EDITION and woundered if there was any way to just add
on the wordprocessor??

Word is an application, XP is an OS.

Best analogy I have heard yet is that the computer is like a pitcher. It is
physical and really has no practical use other than to hold things.

XP is like water. You can survive with only the OS but it will quickly
become boring.

Applications(like word) are like packets of coolaid. They come in lots of
different flavors and appeal to lots of different people. They are fairly
useless on their own, but pour them into the water and you get something
much better that either were before hand.

To install word, one must go out to their local software retailer or online
merchant and purchase a copy of that software.

Or download a free office suite. I won't place a link to any because,
personally, I just don't like them. But maybe someone else will be nice
enough to post a link.

There's no such thing as just Windows XP. You either have Windows XP Home
Edition, WIndows XP Professional Edition, Windows XP Tablet Edition, or
Windows XP Media Center Edition.

There is no such thing as "the" word processor. There are many word
processors, made by Microsoft as well as by other companies. Neither Windows
XP (in any of its versions) nor any other version of Windows has ever come
with Word nor with any other significant application software.

If you want Word, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of Microsoft
Office, or, most inexpensively, as part of Microsoft Works Suite.

Alternatively you can get one of the other competing products, such as
WordPerfect (my personal favorite), StarOffice, or the freeware OpenOffice.

Not a very helpful answer as AFAIA you can't buy standalone Word. You
can get it as part of Works suite (not the same as Works), or part of
MS Office, which is not too expensive if you are eligible for a
student licence.

But I'd second (or third) what others have suggested. Get Open Office.
It's free and the word processor does most of what MS Word does, as
well as supporting the MS Word file format.

The only reasons I use Word may not apply to you:
1. My customers' documents are in Word, and if they are complex I
could cause minor changes to them by working in a different
application.
2. Works suite (including Word) came bundled with the computer.

Go for Open Office.

You certainly can by stand-alone word. Just Google for it, and you'll come
up with many hits, including:

Sorry, that's not correct.

You
can get it as part of Works suite (not the same as Works), or part of

Yes, you can buy it all three ways: alone, as part of Microsoft Office, or
as part of Works Suite.

I just checked, and Word alone costs more than my computer is worth!

Oddly, Works Suite, which includes Word, is less than half as much.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Office suite (or the
Microsoft Works Suite) that contains it.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.
