how do I get MS-DOS

You would have to set up your computer so that you have windows xp on one
partition and MS-DOS (or windows 98) on another partition. When booting up
you could decide to either boot to windows or dos. DOS does not come with
XP but it comes with windows 98.

You don't get, or even want, MS-DOS with XP.
The Command Prompt provides a DOS 'emulator' and, if you
are familiar with DOS commands, will be all you'll need.

The command prompt (a DOS emulator) is all that's available from
within Windows XP. Unlike Windows 9X, XP is not built on MS-DOS,
nor does it contain it, and there no way to access it directly,
other than by booting to it from a DOS diskette.

Although some people may see that as a disadvantage, you should
recognize that much of XP's greatly improved stability is exactly
because it's not built on MS-DOS.

What do you want to do that you can't do with the command prompt?

Short answer: You can't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used, included, or "ridden upon" MS-DOS. The closest they
have is the Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."

There is no MSDOS included in XP to get - beyond the couple of core
files needed to put on a floppy when making a startup disk, useful for a
BIOS flash. If you need real mode DOS your best bet is to boot a Win98
startup floppy, or a Bootable CD that used one as the boot image

Buy a copy of the OS MSDOS then install it on a partition
by following the instructions. MSDOS must be installed on the
partition designated as c:.........XP can be installed onto any free
partition....

Buy it thru eBay.
