How do I get Exchange to stop opening attachments in Outlook?

Since my last update, I have found that when I click on an attachment,
Exchange pops up and tries to open the attachment. Sometimes I get an error
message.

I doubt you have Exchange Server running on your personal computer, so
posting a lot more info about your setup would be helpful. Such as your
version of Outlook, and what kind of email account(s) you use, and more
information on how something is automatically trying to open an attachment
(meaning, what do you see exactly?)
Sometimes I get an error
message.

Which would be.... ?

I am usding Win XP Home & Office 2003 Student & Teacher. When someone sends
me an attachment, Exchange pops up and I click on the attachment seen in that
window and I sometimes get an error message "cannot open."

I still don't know what you mean when you say Exchange. You cannot be
running Exchange on your computer. Exchange is a server product.

Please answer my questions more thoroughly...what kind of email account(s)
are you using, and so forth? What exactly is the window you're seeing?

I've been as thourough as I can. My email program is MS Office Outlook 2003.
When I click on an attachment, a window pops up and identifies itself as
Microsoft Exchange. Sometimes there is an icon in the window (signifying a
forwarded attachment), when I click on that, I usually get the error message:
The set of folders could not be opened. The action could not be completed.
OK. Or: The source application could not be started. OK.
I'm at a loss as to why I'm seeing Exchange pop up, much less why they can't
be opened.

OK. Now we're getting somewhere, although you *still* haven't mentioned what
kind of mail account you use.

What services/accounts do you have in tools | email accounts?

I'm presuming you're using Internet mail. If you don't use Exchange server
(if you're a home user, you likely aren't, or you'd know it), modify your
profile to get rid of the Exchange server service in there.

Tools / Email Accounts says I'm: POP/SMTP, if that helps. But I'm at a loss
as to how to modify my profile to "get rid of" the Exchange server service
there.

Is that all you see in Tools | email accounts?

If you don't see the Exchange server listed in your mail accounts, you don't
have it.

You might try creating a new mail profile for yourself.

Tools / email accounts shows a wizard: add/view email or directory
accounts.

It also shows you "View or change existing e-mail accounts ...." which is
what you need to select in order to view, or change, the existing e-mail
accounts.
