i've read the technical "fix" for this problem, and then tried it without
success. i've spent two hours on the phone with a tech and no resolution.
if you have this problem, you know what i mean...the Outlook feature that
automatically checks for email pops up a dialog box requesting your password
even if you have checked the box to remember it. whomer solves this problem
deserves sainthood.

You'll need to provide more info. At least the following;
-version of Outlook (including Service Pack number)
-what articles you tried
-what else you tried

Taken a look at the following already?

For Outlook 2000 or 2002 on Win 98, NT, or 2000:

For Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000:

(IMO) http://support.microsoft.com/?id=259416

For all Outlook versions on Windows XP (just ignore the parts that refer to

I'm using Outlook 2003 on Windows XP home edition. this problem existed with
an earlier version that was fixed with the registry correction suggested in
the article, but this version won't take the fix. i've tried it numerous
times.

i appreciate your help, believe me. i don't know if you saw my reply post,
so i'm repeating it here:
i'm using oulook 2003 on a windows xp home edition operating system. i've
previously tried the solution you suggested, numerous times, without success.
it doesn't stick. even had an ms tech lead me through it and some other
things over two hours without success. any other suggestions, short of
giving up outlook?

Hi!
I'm having the same problem with Outlook 2002 SP3 on a
Windows XP Pro SP2 machine. Previously I didn't have any
problems, it just "popped up" all of a sudden. I have
tried the fix written in the KB article, it didn't help.
Strange thing is, it tells you to delete a registry key
using regedt32. Well I couldn't delete it with regedt32,
only with regedit.
I have tried reinstalling Outlook, haven't tried
reinstalling Office.
Thanks for any help:

i have an ordinary pop3 account with Qwest.net. this account has worked well
for me for over 5 years. the only thing different is that i also added
another pop3 account using an alias with the same email name and password as
the original. i get mail from both names: jfg3 (original) and
(e-mail address removed). i also host my website through qwest. but this problem
existed before i made any changes and i've tried deleting the alias, but the
popup continues anyway.

i have a question: is there a difference between using regedit and
regedt32? i tried typing in regedt32 and it didn't work, so i used regedit
and got into the registry. the registry appears the same, but does one
perform functions differently in the background?

also, i noticed that there is only one set of keys under the protected
storage system provider, and although i only use one profile, but when i
click on the "MAIL" iceon in control panel and check profiles, it shows
"Joe"(the one i use) and another listed as "Microsoft Outlook Internet
settings".

i have no idea if this helps make sense of this, but my son (an MCSE) nor a
contractor to MS, or the MS Techs have been able to help me fix this problem.
Thanks for any help you can give, but hurry, or it may be my heirs that
benefit.

If the second account you added is an alias of the first account then there
is no need for this account to collect mail since mail from both addresses
go to the same mailbox. Therefor you only have to configure one account to
receive. You can configure this by going to;
Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup-> button Send/Receive...-> button Edit...->
select second account-> deselect Receive E-mails

Regedit and Regedt32 opened 2 different registry editors in WIndows 2000;
one that allowed you to change permissions on registry keys and one that
didn't had that function. In Windows XP there is only one with the ability
to change permissions called Regedit.

Roady,

Like the other 2 posters, I am, having the same problem.

I used to use Outlook 2000 and had no problems whatsoever but since
upgrading to Outlook 2003 I too am getting this Enter Network Password popup
box for Qwest.

I am using Win XP Pro - no service packs, just as it came 2 years back out
of the box. Outlook 2003 with all the latest Office Updates off MS web site.

I have my main email account at my own domain and pull and send all mail
from there as a default account. However, I also have an email account with
Qwest (my DSL ISP)and set Outlook 2003 to go in and pull that mail as well. I
get no problems whatsoever with the default email account and never get asked
for a password as it remembers it. I get the popup box for Qwest about every
20 minutes or so and it does not remember the password when checked.

I spoke with Qwest some time ago and they advised me they have an antispam
mechanism built into their system to stop unscrupulous people using their
outgoing SMTP for sending bulk email spam. You HAVE to check mail as a Qwest
user - (user id and password)BEFORE you can send OUT using their SMTP. If you
do not have a valid user id to receive and can prove it by filling in the
password box you CANNOT send out.

So I was advised to make the Qwest account the default account for
receiving, which in turn allows you to send out using their SMTP. But Qwest
told me that it only works for 20 minutes and you have to do the password box
again. This is to foil spammers - meaning you can only send so many junk
emails in 20 minutes and then have to do the password box again.

Personally, I think that Qwest is sending a spike to Outlook to STOP it
saving the password. This is obviously driving at least three of us crazy in
seeing these pop ups every few minutes.

Surely, there must be something that can be done to stop this happening.
Qwest are blaming it on Outlook of course.

Hope this extra info can give you MVPs the info needed to find a fix. Bear
in mind that this problem did not arise in Outlook 2000 or Outlook 97. It is
only on Outlook 2002 & 2003. There must be something in Outlook causing this.

There's no way that Qwest can make Outlook forget the password. Have you
looked at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290684?
If that doesn't help, could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after you get the password
prompt?

I have a similar problem. Using outlook 2002 on Windows XP with service pack
2 installed. when i ran " http://support.microsoft.com/?id=264672" it could
not be followed exactly. in step 6, the 'apply' button was greyed out. i
did delete the user subkey...

every time outlook opens and i check tools/email accounts/ the password is
blank, even tho the box to save it was checked.

this seems to be a problem for a lot of people and there are apparently no
appropriate fixes being advised. what's up????

-version of Outlook (including Service Pack number)
-what articles you tried
-what else you tried

Outlook Express):

For in a NT domain

i've read the technical "fix" for this problem, and then tried it without
success. i've spent two hours on the phone with a tech and no resolution.
if you have this problem, you know what i mean...the Outlook feature that
automatically checks for email pops up a dialog box requesting your
password
even if you have checked the box to remember it. whomer solves this
