How do I find an error message meaning?

I made several changes in a Word Document and tried to save it, but an error
message comes up saying WinWord.exe is generating errors and the application
will close. I've tried shutting down the computer and trying again, but the
same message comes up in that particular document. This is a thesis paper,
and I don't want to have to start over. Why does this message come up and
how do I fix it?

G'Day psenec,

There is a problem either with Word, or with this Document.

IF Word is ok with OTHER documents THEN
copy the content of THIS document to a new (empty)
document and 'Save As' to an appropriate name. Delete
the original doc when you are happy that all is now well!
ELSE
In Word, use
Help>Detect and repair
or
remove and re-install Office
END IF

Good Luck!!

This has occured before, and I had done as you suggested below by copying to
a new document. However, this time when I copy, the formatting is not the
same as the original document. There are several formatting errors that I
have no idea where they come from. So, either way, I have to make many
corrections. I've read that the problem may be Word 2000 "ghost" documents
and closing by clicking the upper right X. But no mention of how to correct
the problem once it's occured.
