how do I fade in bullet by bullet in PowerPoint?

I want to fade in my text, one bullet point on a list at a time, after a
separate click / press of enter for each bullet.
I can't seem to do this - the paragraph fades in, one bullet at a time and
though I can alter the timing, I can't get the presentation to stop and wait
for a click before fading in the next one.
What do I need to do?
I thought I had managed this in the past with older versions, but I'm lost
now!

Look in the custom animation, and check that you have set the bullets to
advance on click.

In custom animation click the little double down arrow below the animation.
You should then be able to see each line of text. Next to it will be a mouse
(if its click activated or a clock if its "after previous" or nothing if it
"with previous" adjust each line to suit what you want to do. I suggest
after previous for line 1 and click for the rest.

Yes, each of the 8 bullets is set to advance on click. And I've just checked
the presentation and it does exactly what I want! I have discovered that the
preview advances them without click, even though in the presentation it is
set to advance on click. I hadn't realised that the preview is different to
what you see in the presentation.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks John,
That is what I did, but when I clicked "play" the bullets advanced without
click - in the preview. I had not realised that the preview does not reflect
the appearance in the presentation.
So I have learned something today!

Simple mistake!

Try the effect where point one fades in without a click - it often looks
better!

Did that help?
