I purchased a laptop with Windows XP Pro installed. When it boots up I must
enter a password for a network. I have the id and password, but since it is
now a home PC, I don't need to log onto this. How do I get rid of this
requirement to log in.

If I interpret your post correctly, you bought a second-hand machine
that was once a member of a domain. Best practice with a used computer
is to format the drive and clean-install Windows. See this link for
instructions:

I also have some information about what you will need to have on-hand to
reinstall Windows here:

Just scroll down to the "What you will need..." section. Pay particular
attention to Item 1 there.

Otherwise, you'll need to make sure you have the local Administrator
account password so you can log onto that account and 1) change the
computer from a domain member to a Workgroup member (System applet,
Computer Name tab); 2) create local user accounts; 3) delete domain
user accounts.

Windows XP - solution 1:

Select Run from the Start Menu, type control userpasswords2, and click
Ok.
Turn off the Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer option, and click Ok.
Windows XP - solution 2:

If you have one user account and no password configured, Windows XP
will log you in automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do the
following:

Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.
Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).
Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon.
Turn on the Log on automatically at system startup option, type your
username and password, and click Ok.
