New computer. I just opened an old ppt presentation, which is unbelievably
large 13,115 kb! It says that it "...cannot be opened because it contains
read only embedded font".

I need to edit this presentation urgently, otherwise I will have to start
manually copying out the text (which will take hours!).

What has happened and how can I edit/get into the presentation

You did not mention which version of PPT, but I am going to guess PPT 2003.
There are embedded fonts in the presentation which are not loaded onto your
computer and PPT 2003 has a very limited tolerance for them... The solution
is to open the presentation in any other version of PPT, go to OPTIONS >>
SAVE tab >> uncheck EMBED FONTS and save. Now you can open the presentation
on your computer (PPT 2003) without the horribly read-only warning.

You probably have PowerPoint 2003 now. It treats embedded fonts in ways that
make sense to lawyers and only lawyers. Have a look here for some possible
workarounds:

PowerPoint opens presentations as Read-Only, won't allow editing when fonts
embedded
