I am working on a thesis that is a single document. However, I want to
footnote the different parts of it separately - i.e. i want the first
footnote of each chapter to start at 1. do i have to somehow divide the
document up so the programme recognises where the footnotes should restart?
if so, how?
any help would be great, its due in 2 days! :s

Hi Alex,

You'll need section breaks between each chapter (Insert | Break | Section
Break (Next Page)), and then to restart the footnote numbering (through
Insert | Reference | Footnote, probably, depending on version).

You will likely also appreciate, in the next two days:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm

Plus it will explain section breaks for right now.

And perhaps:
