When I add page number (top, center), there is a line
automatically generated and cannot be removed. How can I remove it?
I use office 2003 word.

Does your Header style have a border?

A border can appear on any one or more sides of a paragraph. View | Header,
click in the header paragraph, go to Format | Borders and Shading, and make
sure that None is selected.

I see what you mean. I followed your advices. Like I side, there is no borders
for the header. So there is no problem with this. But, the problem is there
is
a solid line right under the number. It is NOT a part of the border. I tried
office 2000 word and I experienced the same problem. Could you let me
know what you see if you try to put a page number on the top center?

If the line is just under the page number--not all the way across the page--
then there are some other possibilities:

1. It could be that the Page Number character style includes underlining. Go
to Format | Style, select Page Number, and read the style description.

2. If the page number was inserted using the Insert | Page Numbers command
(which is what it sounds like), it is in a frame. It could be that the frame
has a border. Click on the number until you see a hashed border around it,
then go to Format | Borders and Shading and make sure the frame has no
border.

No. The line is as long as the text line--all the way across the page. But it
is just under the text box of the header.

I solved the problem. It is in Format|styles and formatting. I chose
no formatting then it disappeared.
Thanks.
