Some how I the PeopleOnPage spyware on my computer, and not uninstalling it
properly, I now have 122 files: \Program
Files\Frextx\Cache\xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx ; on my "C" Drive. I use
Executive Software Diskeeper Professional to defragement my drives; The files
in question show up as "Could not open" . When I do a search for them, they
do not show up. When I run Ad-Aware, it does not find them. I am running an
AMD K-6 600MHz w/XP Home, Service Pack 2; all updates installed. I am the
only one on this computer, so I have administrator privelidges. Is there any
way in which I can delete those files, so I don't have to format and install
a clean copy of XP!!! ANY HELP WILL BE FOREVER GRADIFIED!! Thank You in
Advance DdY

show up on the list of locked programs. Nothing that even comes close to
what it would be. I am sorry to report this back to you, but that is what
happened!! Any more suggestions that I may eargly try!!
Again, Thank You in Advance DdY

Go through the following malware removal steps systematically. Note that
you must do all work with updated tools in Safe Mode:

I appreciate all the info from you @ elephantboycomputers, but I have a
question before I begin all that is required, and that is: I also run from
time to time the defrager by O&O. I just love the ability to sort and defrag
at the same time. Now I ran O&O-Space, when done it showed 99 files still
frag'd and all in the locked catagory. Now only 1 (one) had the name of
Frextx\cache, part of the peopleonpage spyware. When I ran Executive
Software's Pro, It showed all the same files as Frextx\cache. So is the
problem with my program by Executive, and should I re-install it. Now I
wonder if I have as big as a problem with Frextx as I thought I had. Any more
thoughts or steps I should take before I might do something drastic, like,
Golly gee wiz, I dunna know?
Again, thanks in advance DdY

Googling for "PeopleOnPage" definitely shows that it is spyware. If you
just used its uninstaller to remove it, that wasn't enough (as you
see). A lot of spyware will have a "guard" file, usually a .dll, that
replaces the spyware with a randomly named file every time you delete
the original one. If you do the same Google as I did, you'll see links
to how to remove PeopleOnPage. The general malware removal steps on my
webpage pretty much cover removing cr*p, but with a few exceptions
don't go into specific targets.

I can't comment on any third-party defraggers as I've never used them. A
defragger will not remove files and you will still have the malware
after defragging. Having malware doesn't have anything to do with
defragging.

Yes, I know the defraging will not remove the spy/malware. I was stateing an
observation of the nameing of the files. As they were different from one
point in time to another. But the same files. Oh, what do you mean by "don't
go into specific targets"
You are probably familiar with Executive Software for defragging. I do
stronglly suggest takeing a look at O & O 's. It may be slower than
Diskeeper, but the methods are just too sweet not to have.
Again, thanks and I will let you know if the spyware gets the final boot.

I mean that my malware removal steps don't cover all the specifics of
the hundreds of different malware programs. That would be impossible. I
have heard of Executive Software, but don't find I need anything more
for my Windows machines than the defragger that comes with XP. I defrag
those machines only occasionally. My main work machine (this one)
doesn't run Windows and doesn't need defragging.

I hope you get your spyware problem solved. As I said, it is common for
malware to rename itself randomly.
