how do i delete email automatically from imap server and keep sam.

my husband wants to keep all of his email but it seems that with imap servers
you need to delete the item and then purge to remove an email from the
server. he is filling up his server account when all he wants to do is
remove email from the server when downloaded and keep locally on his
computer. thank you in advance for your help. regards, lynne winner

If he wants to do that, then IMAP should not be his account type. POP
accounts behave as you describe.
