How do I create a message with my boss's out-of-office assistant .

I allegedly have unrestricted permission/access to his Outlook. I was asked
to "Put an out of office message on my e-mail for today only." I opened his
inbox and went through the motions but it didn't take. (I think it ended up
on my e-mail instead.) This is probably dead simple, but right now I am
defeated.
We have XP Professional and MicroSoft Office 2003. Guidance?
