the default set of autoshapes packaged with Powerpoint includes a curved
arrows and a straight chevron... does anyone know how to create a "curved
chevron"..?

There are three methods that come to mind.

1) Create a chevron in power point, export it as a graphic, use an photo
editing program (like Photoshop) to distort it, save as a new graphic,
reinsert it into PowerPoint.

2) Find a shape from one of the on-line storehouses of graphics.

3) Create a chevron in PowerPoint, insert a custom autoshape freeform by
tracing the chevron, delete the original shape, use edit points to modify
the freeform-chevron to reflect a Curved Chevron.
