How do I count the number of Contacts I have?

Very simple. I am developing a "database" of our potential customers by
creating a Contact address card for each. The folder is filling up nicely and
I just want to be able to know how many Contacts we have. How many Christmas
cards should we order?! Thank you!
 
The number of contacts/items in a folder should show in the status bar at
the bottom of the window
