How do I connect to a shared computer?

The Host PC should be your desktop and Guest your laptop. The printer
should be connected to the Host. Wireless printer and document sharing.
Install the printer on the Host PC. Then using Control Panel | Network
enable File & Printer Sharing and make sure you check the box to allow
others to print to your printers. Next under Start | Settings | Printers,
select the printer, check the box to share the printer and assign a name.
Keep the name short and do not include any blanks, like Printer2.

You should now be able to add the printer to your Guest PCs using Start |
Settings | Printers & Faxes | Add Printer. Check the radio button "A
network printer ..." and then either browse for the printer or enter its
name (using \\PCName\PrinterName) and continue until finished. Ensure
that the firewall on your XP PC is set to allow access to remote printers.
If using XP's native firewall ensure that File and Printer Sharing is
enabled and that the box with he same name is checked in the Firewall
exceptions list. The PCName can be found at:

Start>ControlPanel>System>Computer Name tab. It may look something
like: "Home-66djksjcpv". Don't type the quotes.
Click "Next" and it should install the printer on the Guest PC when
it finds it.

Note: You can follow the same procedure to get access to
"Files" from one PC to the other.

How do I connect to a shared Windows XP computer from a Windows XP computer?
I had entered \\192.168.1.101 in the run dialog box previously to connect to
a Win2000 computer but that doesn't seem to work for an Win'XP computer.

Don,

Each computer on your network is assigned a unique IP address
by your router. In the case of your Windows 2000 system, its IP
address is 192.168.1.101. Each of your XP computers will have a
different IP address which can be discovered using the same
process I passed along to you in an earlier thread.

Go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the Open box.
Click OK.
In the command prompt window, enter the following.

ipconfig /all

Enter the IP address of the computer you're trying to access in
the Run box as you did when accessing your W2K machine. Odds
are one of your XP computers can be accessed from the Run box
by entering \\192.168.1.100 and the other one with
\\192.168.1.102.

The truth of the matter is that you shouldn't have to use IP
addresses in order to access another computer on your network.
If your network is properly configured, all shared resources
will show up in My Network Places automatically. Have you
checked My Network Places? Have you restarted each computer to
see if the shared resources show up?

If these XP computers are both running Home Edition, you should
be able to run the Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel on
both systems to set up your network. When you run the wizard,
make sure to select "This computer connects to the Internet
through a residential gateway or another computer on my
network". Residential gateway is how Microsoft refers to your
router.

Good luck

Up until now I've been using \\192.168.1.101 Switched to using
\\192.168.1.102. Can see desired folder on other machine. Have opened it.
When I attempt to drag a file to the folder on the other machine I get an
errer message: "Cannot create or replace "<File Name>": Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
currently in use." What am I doing wrong?

Go back to the computer whose folder you're trying to access.
Right click on the folder and select Properties from the menu.
Make sure you've checked "Allow network users to change my
files".

I left out a step in my earlier reply. It should have read.

Go back to the computer whose folder you're trying to access.
Right click on the folder and select Properties from the menu.
Click on the Sharing tab.
Make sure you've checked "Allow network users to change my
files".

Sorry for the confusion.

Still doesn't work! Routinely go onto internet with both computers. Using
"run '\\192.168.1.101\<Name of shared folder on target system>'".

Don J

I have successfully found the target by using \\192.168.1.102. However I
get a message "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions."

Don J

On the computer you're trying to transfer files from, go to the
Start menu and open My Network Places.
Note: If My Network Places is not listed on your Start menu go
to Control Panel and double click Network Connections. In the
left hand column of Network Connections, look under Other
Places. Click on My Network Places.

What items, if any, are displayed in the right hand pane of My
Network Places?

I have rebooted the target computer. Problem seems to be solved! I am now
copying many files to the target computer. Thank you very much. You seem
to have solved all my problems.
