How do I configure an autonumber field

MS OFFICE 2000 9.0.6926 SP-2
Win XP Pro

I selected Autonumber for field type with New Values property set to
increment. A one (1) appeared in in the first record as expected, but second
record "(autonumber)" appeared where I expected a two (2)???

If you actually begin the entry of a new record (autonumber) will be replaced
with an actual number.
