I have a line chart which contains about 50 years. For 5 of the years, data
was not collected at all. Instead of having zero, which is inaccurate, or
continuing the line from 1970 to 1975 (indicating that the data remained
somewhat constant), I want to break the line or make it dotted. Can I do
this in PowerPoint?

See if this does what you want:

Activate the chart by doubleclicking it
Choose Tools, Options
In the Graph Options dialog box, click the Chart tab
Choose one of the "Empty cells plotted as" options. Try "Not plotted" to break
the line where there's no data.
