Edit your Boot.INI.

Go to Start/Run and type: msconfig and press OK.
Click the Boot.ini Tab.
Click the Check All Boot Paths Button.

This will check the bootini file for any entries that do not belong there and offer to remove them. After you finish, reboot the computer to see the results. If the system does not boot directly to XP, perform the following.

Go to Start/Run and type: sysdm.cpl and press OK.
Click the Advanced Tab and in the Start Up and Recovery section, click the Settings Button.
In the System Startup section, click the Edit Button.

This will open the Boot.ini file.
Click Edit/Select All and then Edit/Copy.
Close the boot.ini file.

Paste the results in a reply to this message so we can take a look.

Huh? Either XP boots or it doesn't.

And if it doesn't boot then then how do you perform this ...
Go to Start/Run and type: sysdm.cpl and press OK.
Click the Advanced Tab and in the Start Up and Recovery section, click the Settings Button.
In the System Startup section, click the Edit Button.

This will open the Boot.ini file.

Sorry, maybe I'm missing something, but beyond the first statement your
post makes no sense,

Load your boot.ini file into notepad (its just a text file) highlight it
in its entirety and select copy, careful don't make any changes. Paste
it into a follow up to you original post here. One of the MVP's will
edit it for you.

The OP was getting a menu when he booted the system that he did not want to see. He wanted to boot directly to XP without seeing this menu. The menu was displaying because he has 2 extra entries in the boot.ini file.

Here is his original message:

The above should work but then I'm not an MVP so use at your own risk.

You have a couple of extraneous entries in the boot.ini file. These are there because you apparently have some kind of backup/recovery/tune up program installed that created a second partition that is used to recover the system in case of a disaster.

Since editing the boot.ini file can cause the system to become unbootable, if an error is made, the prudent thing to try first would be to use the program that placed these options there. (If this is a program that you did not intentionally install, it may have been installed by the manufacturer of the PC and may be the only way there is to recover the original OS installation.) If you do not want this programs options at boot up, open that program and de-select these recovery options (if present) or completely uninstall the program. Read the instructions for the program first for the instructions on how to do this. Once this is done, reboot once to see if this fixes the problem. If the problem is still there, post back here and I will give you instructions on editing the boot.ini file. Include a new, current copy of the boot.ini file.

Hi Ronnie,
Firstly thanks again to everyone for trying to help me solve this issue.
Before I received this post from Ronnie I went into msconfig>>>>boot.ini and
selected the bootable version of xp pro and not the tuneup utilities backup,
I selected a timeout of 10 seconds reebooted and everything works fine.
I do have a partition, I had vista RC1 on a dual boot but I have had too
many problems with Vista that I have removed the OS from that partition

Have I done the right thing?

Yes, you did good. :)

What you need to do now is edit the Boot.ini file and set it back to the default setings to reflect the changes since you uninstalled Vista and you are only using the first partition with XP. Use the recommended settings that John posted earlier. After you make the changes, you're Boot.ini file should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Let us know if you need more help.

Can someone take a look at my boot.ini file. I have some things in there that
I don't think were there last week. Might be causing me to have a 5min. delay
in starting my computer.
Thanks in Advance. Melissa
---------------------------------------------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /TUTag=3DGZ2O /Kernel=TUKernel.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition
(TuneUp Backup)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /TUTag=3DGZ2O-BAK

---------------------------------------------------------------

It looks like you have used a software product called Tune Up Utilities. There are a lot of users who seem to be having a problem with this software installing a new log-on screen and slowing down the boot process. When you first boot the computer do you see a screen that gives you several boot options?

You can edit the boot.ini file and manually set it back to the default.

Go to Start/Run and type: sysdm.cpl and press OK.

Click on Advanced tab and in the Start Up and Recovery section, click the Settings button. On the following screen, click the Edit button. This will open the Boot.ini file in Notepad.

Remove all of the following text from the end of the file.

/TUTag=3DGZ2O /Kernel=TUKernel.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition
(TuneUp Backup)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /TUTag=3DGZ2O-BAK

Now the boot.ini file should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center
Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Click on File/Save and close Notepad.

Reboot the system to see the changes.
