how do i build a template

I need to build a template with fill-in fields in the middle of the document
and am having trouble finding instructions/tutorials on template building.
can someone help

Fill-In fields has a specific meaning in Word, and it probably is not what
you want. You may want to be using what Word calls an "online form." Check
this in help. For more about online forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles. You may also want to look at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm.

There are other options if you do not want to be protecting a document for
forms.
