how do i automatically remove email from imap server when i downl.

my husband wants to have his emails removed automatically from imap server
when he downloads them to his computer with outlook. it seems that he needs
to delete them locally and then purge them to remove them from imap server.
can we get around this and keep them in outlook while removing them when he
downloads? thanks in advance for your help. regards, lynne winner
