I was trying to get a font color right for company color and once stumbled
upon a box in custom color that would allow me to set the pantone number but
I can't find it again.
Anyone? Please.

Sorry, but you're misremembering; perhaps it was in another program, or
maybe there was a third-party add-in. No version of Office has ever had
native support for the Pantone system.

You may find charts in some of the results of
http://www.google.com/search?q=pantone+rgb that will give RGB values to
approximate the Pantone colors. You can enter these through the More Colors
dialog in Word. Once you have a satisfactory color, the only way to save it
to use again is to create a character style that includes it.
