I am unable to add words to my dictionary in my version of word
(student/teacher 2003). Whenever a word comes up as spelt wrong, i can only
ignore it, the option to add to dictionary is greyed out, which becomes very
irritating if i am writing scientific essays with many words the computer
doesn't recognise.

One of the more common reasons for "Add to dictionary" not being available is a
language conflict between the language formatting of the current text, and the
language setting of the active custom dictionaries.

Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar/Custom Dictionaries. Are any custom dics
listed here? Which entries (if any) are bolded? Are you able to edit any of
them (by selecting one and clicking the button)?

Tools >options > spelling & grammar - ensure there is a custom dictionary
defined. If necessary add another.

there is a custom dictionary defined (custom.dic) and selected but not only
can i not add words when just doing a spell check, if i try to modify the
custom dict and add words it says that it does not recognise all the
characters and so cannot add it?

Hmmm. It sounds like the custom dictionary is corrupt (or full). Can you
open it in Notepad (it's a text file)?
Word can work with more than one custom dictionary. Try adding another
and/or replacing the original.

Is this an older custom dictionary that you've brought forward from a previous
version? It's possible that it was created without Unicode support, and the
terms you're trying to add are in Unicode.

See what happens if you open in in Notepad then File/Save As. Choose "Unicode"
from the "Encoding" list, save, close then start Word and test again.
