How do I add attachments to an email merge?

I'm new to mail merging. I've read the related response to this question
going back as far as 2005! Sounds complicated! Is there still no simple way
to add attachments to a merged email? This would seem to be a VERY COMMON
need?

Shame on Microsoft if this has not been addressed yet. Likewise I apologize
if a simple solution exist and I missed it. Can any one help?
