How do I add a file (e.g. Excel) to the Outlook shortcut pane?

I want to add files that are external to Outlook (Excel files) to the
Shortcuts pane in the Outlook navigation pane. I have done this in the past
but I do not remember how I did it and cannot find out how from the Microsoft
website "How To / Help" entries.
