how do i add a comment for a received mai?

when I receive a mail, i would like to add a comment to the mail, which could
be for follow up action or status update.
I know that this feature is available in Thunderbird and lotus
 
I know 2 ways that work:

type in the subject field.

use a Flag and you can also edit the text in it. You could have a few
"standard" flags you use " To be actioned" Please print" etc. Many
executives with assistants use this approach to write notes to and fro their
boss in the boss' Inbox.
