How do files suddenly become read-only?

Using Word 2007 on PC and laptop networked, I often try to save a file and
get the read-only message. I do not deliberately make any file read-only.
Then I cannot save it without changing the name, etc. What is causing this?
 
If you are using Vista as the OS of the computer where your document is
stored and have not drilled down through umpteen obscure menus to grant
ownership/privileges then you may be able to open the document on another
computer but it will be in read-only format.
You can save it with another name or learn how to configure--on your own as
documentation is laughable--networking on Vista.
This has been my experience with the abomination that is Vista.
Yours may be worse.
