how difficult to rename a domain 8 pc's

the original installer named the domain about 20 digits and I am haveing a
problem setting up vpn.
wish to rename with 8 digits they run 2000 small business server and 7 win
2000 clients with exchange.

I'm afraid you need to remove and re-create domain.

if it is in mixed mode... what about changing the netbios domain to
something simple ?

Or does that also require the AD domain to be torn down and rebuilt ? Which,
would mean that all the accounts and other resources to the domain would
need to be recreated as well, since the SID's wont match up.
