how can you perserve the date on a doc

It sounds like you have a Date Field - how it got there I can't be sure, but
one option is to delete the field & type in whatever date you want to
replace it with.

Alternatively, select the field then Shift+Control+F9 to unlink the field in
order to retain whatever date is currently displayed.

If you're inserting the date by way of the Insert> Date & Time command make
sure there's no check in the Update Automatically box.

Can't offer more without knowing how the field was inserted, what version of
Word you're using & more about the document itself.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to print off legal documents
that were sent to me by my lawyer. I'm taking the document attachment from
Hotmail and Word is opening them and the date is todays date on each
document. I tried the Alt F9 and change to {createdate} and then F9 again
and that didn't do it. I have Microsoft Office Word 2003. Any help would be
great,..thanks

Actually I believe you have a related but different problem. The source lies
with the template your lawyer's office is using - that's where the change to
a CREATEDATE field needs to be made. It's employing the wrong type of field
for the date which is causing documents based on that template to have the
date updated every time the doc (or a copy of it) is opened.

Changing to a CREATEDATE field in your copy probably won't cause the date to
change to the correct date that should be in the letter (unless it just
happens to be the same day) - it will change most likely to the date you
downloaded & opened the attachment because that is the date *your* copy was
actually created. [Keep in mind that an attachment isn't the original, it's
a separate copy of the file used to generate the attachment.]

Also, depending on the nature of the document, it may be ill-advised to
modify it in any way.

I'd suggest that you contact your lawyer's office & diplomatically suggest
that someone correct their templates if they want the correct dates to be
retained in the docs they're sending out. Quite frankly, they should thank
you for bringing it to their attention:-)

I would go one further and suggest that for legal documents they avoid the
use of date fields in their templates and use fixed text dates. This is easy
enough to achive by a variety of automatic or semi automatic methods.

I am having the same problem with letters created using a template. I want
each letter to auto-insert today's date when I create a new letter but, when
I open it from Explorer at a later date e.g. for printing or sending a copy,
I need it to display the date created. Definitely a problem if you are using
letters in a contractual scenario. The answer must be in the template and
must be so simple, but I cannot seem to find it. Please help ASAP!!!

The reason is that your template has inserted a date field which shows the
system date. What you need to do is change those date fields for createdate
fields - ALT+F9 change {DATE \@ "d MMM yyyy"}or {TIME \@ "d MMM yyyy"} to
{CREATEDATE \@ "d MMM yyyy"} then F9 and ALT+F9 - and change the date in
your letterhead template so that future letters based on it show the correct
dates. The switches \@ "d MMM yyyy" may be different at your location.

Also change the date field in the template to a createdate field so that
future documents created from it will have the required dates (note that if
you open the template it will display the date it was created)
