POP3 is the protocol used for *receiving* messages from a mail host. SMTP
is the protocol used for *sending* messages to a mail host. You are sending
okay. You cannot receive. That is because you have not configured the
option within your Gmail account to enable POP3 access.

When you've setup your account correctly your messages wil be deliverd to a
different folderset than the ones from Hotmail as Hotmail is a different
type of account (HTTP vs POP3). When you collapse all your folders you
should see 2 differentset easily. Expand the non-Hotmail one and you should
see another Inbox folder with your messages.

The folder set will be called "Personal Folders" or "Outlook Today".

Could i seprate the accounts in different folders? so gmail will be in one
folder and hotmail will be in another.

All POP3 and Exchange accounts get their mails aggregated under one message
store (i.e., the personal folders set). Each HTTPmail gets its own message
store (i.e., its own set of folders). Each IMAP account gets its own
message store, too.

Gmail is a POP3 account (i.e., you access Gmail via POP3), so your Gmail
messages will get put into the default Inbox in your personal folders. If
you want to keep your Gmail messages separate of message that you receive
through other POP3/Exchange accounts, you must use a rule to move incoming
messages based on through which account they were retrieved. You can define
rules on POP3/Exchange accounts, and also for IMAP accounts, but not for
HTTPmail accounts. Hotmail is an HTTPmail account so it automatically gets
is own separate message store.

That will happen automatically, since gmail is POP and Hotmail is HTTP.
HTTP accounts always get their own folder sets.
